Fished the Algonkian Park of the Potomac today. The water clarity is getting better, but is still not as good as I would like it. There are clouds of mud over most of the river. The Virginia side seems to be quite a bit clearer than the Maryland side. We caught 14 in about five hours, but none of them were very big. The biggest was 14". Most of the fish were very small. I just don't know when this water will clear up.

Fished out of Algonkian Regional Park - lots of company!! Problem was that none of it was the kind with fins! A cold front moved through early this morning blowing out the rain and clouds. However, it also seemed to dampen the fish activity. The main river had fairly breezy conditions but calm water was easily found around the islands on the Virginia side south of White's Ferry. I got ONE bass to strike on a Rapala black/gold but that was it - even then, he spit the hook while I was trying to bring him in. My buddy was using poppers and propeller lures, but with no luck. I also tried Rat-L-Traps, jigs with white grubs, and gold mepps. The fish were just not responding. We were out for about five hours before calling it quits. Still, a nice sunny day on the water - beats working!

What a gorgeous day! 75 degrees and almost NO HUMIDITY!! Took the wife and son (2 1/2 years old) to the Upper Potomac and launched at Algonkian Regional Park. The upper reach of the Potomac in that area above Seneca Creek was running a bit high, but not unusually so. The plan was to just boat around a bit, but since I had my fishing rod and tackle box, we headed up the Virginia side of the river a bit and I got the line wet. Not much luck with white grubs on gold spinner set ups, which worked GREAT about two weeks ago. After about a half hour of this, at my wife's suggestion, I switched to a lipless crank bait (black and gold). BOOM, caught a respectable size smallie at about a pound and a half with the first cast. Also got a mess of sunnies. My wife - the fishing genius who hasn't fished in about six years (I should listen to her more often)! My son got a kick out of seeing me bring in the fish and then unhook and release them back to the river. Since we only had a couple of hours, I had to quit early. Still, a gorgeous weather day to be on the river with the family. Beats working any day - fish or no fish.

Report filed by Rob Shaw from Smithfield, Va...home of SMITHFIELD HAMS.

Towed my ANGLER'S CHOICE TR-20 with my DALE EARNHARDT CHEVROLET Silverado truck fueled by CHEVRON gasoline and AMSOIL lubricants to Leesylvania Friday morning.

**JUST KIDDING STEVE!**

Put in at Leesylvania Friday morning and ran to Mattawoman. Put 8 fish in the boat in about 4 hours. Would have stayed longer but I put too much faith into the weather reports...and the tide was shifting. 3 fish on a Zoom Seet Pea crank and the rest on a hand poured 7" curltail worms blood red in color. I initially believed the fish to be in the grass and a few small ones were, but found the quality fish to be relating to wood/pilings. Best 5 about 9lbs.
