Went fishing with the old man again today. Been having a string of good luck the last 3 times I've been to Harrison, so I think I've FINALLY figured that place out....after years of getting skunked there. I probably could have caught upwards of 20 fish had I not jerked the worm out of their mouths. The fish were pretty aggressive and biting well, but they were short striking. I have a feeling they were mostly pickerel but I did land one bass that was really close to being black rather than green. My father threw the kitchen sink at them (spinners, worms, top water, etc) but all they seemed to want was a white trick worm fished shallow and fast. (like a fluke) I ended up landing probably 5-6 fish. Big fish of the day was a fat 4-5lbs bowfin that gave me one hell of a fight. Water temp was almost 68 degrees. NO wind, the lake was smooth as glass. Until that is, around 5:30 a sudden gust of wind came out of nowhere and settled in at a steady 15 mph or so. We came off the water then. Saw several boats and several fish landed. I can't tell you how happy I am to have "figured this place out"...it's kicked my butt many times and I consider it my "home waters" so to speak.

I fished out in the main river around riprap and current breaks. the fish hit pretty agressively on both the up current and down current sides. I probably had just as many fish slam the thing and miss the hook. I also weighed a 67-8 blue for some guys, the stripers were destroying shad when i left, but they wanted no part of anything threw at them.

Comments

In the afternoon, the bass really crushed the Horny Toad as I buzzed it on the surface with a stop and go retrieve. I saw a lot of small beds but no fish were on them. I caught some so shallow that my boat was sitting on the bottom and they were even shallower. Most were 1-2 pounds with three in the 4 pound class. Most of the shallow areas have dollar pad stems almost to the surface with algae clinging to it, so the Horny Toad and Fluke were the best lures for me to use. Only caught a couple in shallow grass (<2')and they were beside laydowns.

I fished all day yesterday and couldn't find fish at all, and fished all over the river. Today i couldn't get bit on soft plastics, but managed to land two small keepers and lose three fish on the spinnerbait all around wood or overhanging brush. The three I los were all a result of being in extremly thick cover, and tryign to set the hook through vines and trees. It was nice to find some active fish, the creeks are heating up, and I saw some boats fishing the main river this weekend.

I went back again to the golf course pond where I live for the second time today. I had been thinking about it all day at work and couldnt wait to go fish. Again there were no golfers to get in my way :) The pond is pretty small. Only about 2 acres. I tried fishing what worked for me yesterday and the fish tore it up. I dont think they are used to seeing anything so it doesnt really matter. My first cast caught a bluegill so their is a food chain. I also noted tons of crawfish mounds around the pond. My next 2 fish were crappies. I started working around the bank catching bass and they just seemed to get bigger and bigger :)The biggest fish were in a cove on the downwind side on the weed edges. My biggest today was in the high 3's. At one time i did see a HUGE fish turn towards my worm and pass on it. I cant say it was a bass and I have no idea what people have put in this pond. Almost looked like a huge carp. If it was a bass I want to catch it! Again, no one said anything to me about fishing there. One jogger asked if I was catching anything and I said no. My biggest fear was that someone would see me catching fish from their house and get the idea. If anyone says anything my answer is hey I live on the golf course and I pay my home owners association fees, give me a break.

That went about 1lb and half each. Then went pitching docks the rest of the day in main river end in the back of creeks. Ended up catching two more keepers off those. one was about 2 and half pounds the other was about one lb and half. Caught a bunch of fish that were right around 12 inches but just know big fish. Ended up with a little over 6lbs on a four fish limit. Tough day, but one of those things.

Got off around lunch time from work and invited my old man to meet me at the lake. Dropped the boat in and started off casting worms. No hits. I switched to a white spinnerbait and started catching some pickerel. My second fish was the biggest pickerel I've ever caught. I didn't have an accurate scale but I'd guess it was around 3-3.5 lbs. I went on a streak where I was catching quite a few. Gave my Dad a white spinner and he started catching fish too. In fact for the past few years he's rambled on and on about how he doesn't know if he's ever caught a bass on that lure in his life....next thing he gets a nice chunky 2 pounder on it. He picked up another pickerel too and I caught a chunky 2lbs bass too. Both bass had scars on them, looking like they were getting ready to spawn. All in all we landed about 10 fish total. I lost what felt like a REALLY nice one when it got me tangled up in some wood. Wish I coulda seen that fish. I had him on for about 30 seconds and was motoring over to see if I could pull him out of the brush when he came off. Lastly, we had a really funny surprise after my dad caught his bass. My labrador retriever was so interested in what my dad was doing, she lost her footing and fell off the side of the boat. Shoulda seen the look on her face. Atleast she found out that she could still swim. She was seriously freaked out :)

Comments

I met Hookpuller and the gang. Sure was windy. The water temp was 5-6 degrees colder than last week and then warmed up late in the afternoon. Had to roam around quite a bit to find some fish that would bite. With the wind blowing so hard, I had to hold my rod tip at the water surface to work the wacky rig and use a lead nail for weight-caught the most doing that.

You may or may not remember my bluegill fishing references to the "overlook". It lies along the flood wall above the fall line near 8th st in downtown Richmond. There is a concrete overlook above the rapids. Directly below is a pool about 60' in diameter. Fish of all species are naturaly washed from the rapids into this pool where the get stuck. The fishing here is quite good and access is easy. You can even park right above it when you find it. Long story short, I went there this afternoon to try and catch smallmouth on a slider worm. I immediately noticed big (16") herring schooling and rolling in the pool where they were getting stacked up by the rapids. I went back to the Jeep and got the sabiki rigs. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. I had one or two on every cast. Man these fish fight fight harder than anything. They fight, they pull, they jump and swerve. All this after swimming all the way from the ocean. Amazing fun.

The bass wanted a fast acting jerkbait, just a one second pause,if that. The fish didnt seem to be feeding, so reaction baits were key, take it or leave it,but it wont be here long. That was my presentation and what I set out to do after they wouldnt touch our Brushhogs, jigs, and finesse worms. The smallest bass,1 and1/2 lbs, even hit my shakyhead as I was reeling it in fast for another cast. That told me what they wanted.

Comments

Practicing for the Shadytree tourny next week.Found a nice area where fish were holding in about 8 foot of water, near a point and a spawning bay.I caught all three bass there and left it alone. The other 2 bass came on a jerkbait. The largest was just over 6 lbs and was 21 inches long with a belly full of eggs. The last bass was a solid 2 lber who fell for the jerkbait as well.No telling what they'll be doing by T-Time though, conditions change daily and March is so unpredictable, just like the bass in Chesdin!

I caught one more about 4 lbs. The GF caught her personal best, a 4.5lber too. Then we tried trolling deeper and got a double. Around 9am the fish stopped biting. They was a striper T going on in the area we were fishing so the competition for fish was tough. All in all it was a great trip and the scenery was awesome. I will send pics to Mike cause i dont know how to post them.

Caught one fish around 8 am before the wind picked up that went 4lbs 2 oz on a worm. and that was the only bass that I caught. Caught one nice pike also that was proably 5 or 6 lbs. Not alot much to say. The winning weight of our club tourney was 7lbs on a 4 fish limit. Most fish were caught on worms, however did watch someone catch a nice two or three pounder on a jerkbait. Just looked around for a while and fished mostly boat docks. Caught 5 keepers and lost at least that many. My son Brandon outfished me again...He landed three of the bass he lost a nice one close to the power plant. This was my first time at Anna and cannot wait to get back...Not much cover but still nice anyways....

Went out today without any real intentions of what I wanted to do. On a whim I decided that I had a full tank of gas in the boat so I was going to make the run all the way up to Richmond. It was such a nice day, why not? I stopped at the wastewater discharge and tied on a sabiki rig....FIRST cast and I felt that familiar tug...followed by a tarpon-like mad dash. The gizzard shad are there! They weren't as big as the ones Bill & I caught last year, I guess it's still a bit early for the big ones to be there yet. No American or Hickory's but I couldn't care any less, these suckers fight well enough! I HAD to call Bill (figuring he was on a plane or something). He didn't answer so I left a voicemail while I was reeling another fish in. He calls me back 2 minutes later and I'm struggling to hold the phone and talk to him because I had another fish on lol. After about 4 more I snapped off my only sabiki rig so that was it for those fish for the day. I cut up one of the shad and catfished for about an hour....got bored with that and changed into crappie mode....no takers. Went back down river to Meade's pit to bass fish for a bit. On the way back just before the 895 bridge, the wind was howling directly against me and one of my ultra-light rods went flying over the side and to the bottom of the channel. @#%)*(%# No luck in Meade's and I even went into the barge pits for about an hour to crappie fish some more...no luck. Came back in around 1pm or so. Osbornes was very busy.

Fished the Pamunkey's tournament today on the james. Seemed like a pretty good turn out for the tournament. Anyways fishing conditions where tough. Fished in the barge pit the whole tournament. That i think was my first mistake. The wind made many banks hard to fish. The main river was flooded and flowing out. Ended up catching two fished that went about 3lbs and then i also caught a 7lb catfish. All on the jig and pig. They wanted the bait pretty slow and it was just hard to feel the bait because of the wind blowing. After dealing with the wind, should have ran to a couple other pitts. but just decided to stay in there and try to gut it out. I think it took six pounds to get a check and 12lbs to winn. Talked to alot of guys in the barge pit and not many people where catching much. I think one guy did catch them in the barge pit. but that was it, everyone else i talked to had one or two fish from the barge pit. Missed one nice fish in the morning that proably cost me but other then that i caught every bite i had.
