Had to go try out the new rod and reel. I am trying to figure out the fish here. They are definately transistioning from what I experienced a month ago. Once the spawning is all down I hope to figure out a summer pattern that I can work with. Oh yeah, and I found out tonight that if a beaver surfaces about 4 feet from you in the dark and does a big tail slap on the water, you will jump about an equal distance in the opposite direction. Scared the #@%$ out of me.

Weedless wacky rigged the worms. Fished all the open shallow areas along with the stumps and dollar pads in shallow water. Threw to places where the bass were splashing the surface when they were chasing shad. Caught some off beds with the wacky rig.
In the morning until noon, there were pickerel and bass chasing shad all over the shallow areas. Some of the shad were about 3" in length and most were 6" in lenght. The most concentrated groups of shad were in the creek channels, I would throw into a group of shad and catch a bass that was following them. About 10 of the bass were in the 4# range and I did not see any real larges ones on beds.

Fished alot of baits today, and had high hopes for topwater or frogs. It just didn't work out that way. There were alot of fish moving onto the beds. But with the off color water it is really hard to sight fish. Should be a good week out there with the full moon and 70 degree overnight temps.

Black spinner, big beetle spin, black blue chatter bait
I hooked one medium bass on the chatter bait but it came off near the shore. I think those big chatter bait/ jig hooks put a hole in their lip that they can shake off of. just my opinion. Hooked a large bass on the big black/chartreuse beetle spin. The fish rolled half way out of the water and was a really good fish. Thats when the beetle popped out. Hook was TOO small I guess. Couldnt win. I did see a really large fish swirling on a bed tight to a point about 10 feet away. I decided not to disturb the fish since I think someone said they will spawn on the full moon and thats tomorrow. I figure, its a pond. Shes not going anywhere.

Just moved here so have to really learn the lake better. I fished the lake about 5 years ago a few times. I was disappointed the first few hours without a bite, especially when I hear all the #s everyone gets out of here. I'm not great at the soft plastics and I hate to fish slow and deep. What a day. I had a few hours in the morning before I had to be back. Let me just say that after years of getting whipped by this lake, I have this place completely figured out. Today was the best day I EVER had on this lake...Every bass I hooked into was SOLID. I lost a 5 pounder at the boat after a long fight....but landed a couple 2 pounders, a 3 pounder, and one that went 4 pounds. All fish were just so thick and healthy looking. Caught lots of pickerel too, including a few nice long ones. What a great day. I'll put pictures in the forum.

Just wanted to take a minute to thank Wayne P. for his in dedpth reports of Briery. Used pretty much the same techniques he described for fishing in the wind this week with similar results. The fish were really on the Horny Toad only fished four hous cauht 8 on the toad missed at least that many. Caught a couple of them with the follolw up Senko and caught all three of the fish I saw on beds with the drop shot. Did not see as many fish on beds as I expected. But I guess the hot and cold weather has them a little confused.

I stopped on my way home from work today and bought a tub of nightcrawlers cause I wanted to do some bluegill fishing on my ultralight rod. Well I thought they were nightcrawlers but they actually were red wigglers. Oh well guess I should read the label next time. The weather was so nice that I went down to the pond for an hour. The fish were VERY active. The bobber no sooner hit the water than it was down under. I caught 3 LMB to 4lbs, 4 crappie and more bluegills than I could count. A couple of the gills were probably pushing citation size.

No bass were on beds today. Some were close to the areas where beds were made last week. The water was just getting clear enough to see the bottom in 3' or less and the rain from yesterday is coming into the lake to make it too dingy to see them again. The forecasted heavy rain for Sunday should take the water from dingy to MUDDY.
