16 bass- largest 6 pounds 10 ounces, 7 pickerel
Chatterbait
1'-5' above grass
Used the Chatterbait to call the fish out of the grass. Caught all of them close to creek channel edges and drops near shallow water.
Started off with a chartreuse blade/chartreuse skirt/white trailer but the finish came off the blade after about 50 casts. I have a red one that did the same thing. Poor quality since the original company was sold.

Went out with a buddy for a few hours. He caught 2 in the first ten minutes or so, nothing huge but it was still a tug. We both missed about 10 bites each and that was it. Water was so high, that there was no incoming tide up in the Appomatox. In fact, during the "incoming tide" the water was moving so fast down river that my t/m could bareley even keep us from floating backwards. And, the rock wall near little boat harbor was almost completley under water.

Anchored at the turn by Henricus point, was marking a good school of something with the graph. Right on a good drop off there. No luck, moved up a little towards the pits and still nothing. Gave up and went bass fishing for about an hour. Water was extremely dirty with lots of debris...

Took advantage of the warm weather to wake up early and hit the river. Went straight into the barge pits from Osborne. Caught 1 small bass, about a pound, in a sunny 3-4 foot deep pocket beside one of the barges. Had another sequence of events which entailed me seeing 2 does running along the shore-line, missing a strike because I was paying attention to the deer, reeling it in quick to cast back to that spot, and actually seeing the fish chase my lure all the way to the boat and spooked it...doh! Around 9:30am I got bored with bass fishing, tied on a Silver Buddy, and started jigging for stripers. On the way to the 295 bridge my spinner bait/jig tray flew off my deck and into the water. Circled back around to pick it up and it had opened, spilling all of my jigs & spinners to the bottom of the river....#@%)*(#%!! No takers on the jigging but I stopped by the wooden bridge across from Dutch Gap to jig around those pilings and saw a guy who I guess thought he had a state record catfish on but you could obviously tell he was hung up....He sat there going round and round the same 5 yard diameter acting like he was fighting this fish.....it was very evident that it was not a fish. I swear he sat there fighting this "fish" for 30 minutes, his line not going anywhere. The only conclusion I could come to was that either he didn't want to lose that particular rig or he had actually caught a fish which had wrapped him around something.....regardless, I got tired of watching and split. The river was SLAM FULL of debris. Granted I don't typically go out onto the river after a bad rain but this was definitely the worst I've ever navigated in.

beutiful day on the water, best fish of the day was 4.13, next best was 2.12, and the rest were 1 - 1 and a half. Ran into bassnva out there and chatted with him for a few minutes before I had to husstle back to the ramp. He was also having a pretty good day at that point. Talked to another guy who said he did real well in the main James earlier in the day on jetties and laydowns.

I started throwing crankbaits & jerkbaits with no luck, working my way to the back. When I got back there I started using the senko wacky style throwing it to the bank and working it back. I caught 8 bass and had at least that many bites. All but one were over 12" and 3 were over 15".
It was after 2 when the fish started biting. So I was probably in the right place at the right time.

Took either 6th or 7th in the Hopewell Tuesday night series classic. We finished just ounces out of the money. Typical fish story, but Jeff had one come unbuttoned after getting out of a laydown that would have put us in around 4th. The fish really turned on in the last couple of hours for us, but was only able to cull once up during that time.

Lipless crankbait caught both fish
3-5 feet
Got out around 1100 hours, a bit on the cool side with the wind blowing. Started off in shirleys pit and caught one LMB on a lipless crankbait. Tried slowing down a spinner bait and some soft plastics but they didn't pan out. Got a little too breezy and cold, so I went into the Appomattox around Hopewell and caught another LMB on the lipless bait. This was a nice one, went around 3.5 lbs. Lost that bait on some underwater debris, changed baits and did not get another hit. Was hopeing I would do better in the pits, but water tepms were about the same anywhere I went. It was nice to get out. Probably will go out tomorrow and try around the dutch gap area.
