Comments

Capt. Art Conway of Conway's River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) reported that Chickahominy Lake water temperatures last week were still in the low to mid 40's. Crappies with a few white perch and an occasional bass and pickerel were still around bait schools in some of the deep holes in the upper lake and a few of the holes in the lower lake. Crappies were near the bottom in some holes and suspended at 8 to 10 feet in 20 feet of water in other holes. Live minnows fished on three-way rigs near the bottom or at the depth of suspended fish caught crappies, white perch, and pickerel. Blade baits like Riverside Rippers and jigging spoons fished with short lifts near the bottom took a few crappies and perch along with some nice pickerel. The larger crappies were less abundant in the deep holes and may be starting to migrate toward spawning areas up the creeks. Some nice pickerel have been taken recently in the larger creeks. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Hollis Pruitt had 15 crappies from 9 to 12 inches and a 23 inch pickerel.

Locations

Fish

1 ring perch

Lures

Silver Buddy (gold)

Depth

12-25 feet

Method

Tried deep hole jigging for the ring perch on the sharp turns in the river. Marked plenty of fish on the depth finder, just couldn't get them to hit. The one perch I did catch was snagged and small. Saw some guys catching them on minnows. Very, very windy. One gust I experienced had to go 35mph.

My girlfriend had to go to her new office for an hour today. Decided to tag along since she said there was a lake there. If the fishing is this good on a day like today, cant wait for Spring/Summer. Ive never fished for or caught a yellow ring perch before. Actually never even seen one before today.

Comments

Man it was cold this morning. I didn't feel like going through the whole process of loading up the boat and launching so I just rode down to Walkerton to fish around the piers and dock pilings. It was a very high tide and I couldn't cross over the old bridge span since the little bridge connecting that island to the shore had about a foot of water at the base of the steps. Trust me I didn't want to get my feet wet this morning. Didn't catch anything and didn't fish too long. It was way too cold. Ended up just riding around King & Queen, King William, Hanover, & New Kent looking for places to fish...didn't see anything.
