Chickahominy River
sunny hot, light breeze
seemed stained, low visibility
from Rockahock down stream to a marina near island and sunken barge
4 lmb
spinnerbait, senko, buzzbait, frog
2-5 foot
tried the buzzbait in the shad with only one bass, could not find much shade. Water was low tide when I got there and high when I left. Got 2 on spinnerbait on laydowns. Got 1 on senko around a dock
Only my 2nd time here. Last time was in the fall , same tide and I got one 5.5 lber. This time first 3 bass was 12 inchers or so. Last bass 2 was 2.3lbs . Have not figured out how to fish tidal water yet, need to do more research. Could only muster 2 frog bites in the pads, missed both. Can't figure out why few hits on frog. Might need to fish the edge of the weeds instead of in the weeds and pads next time, not sure.

Briery Creek
Sunny 92
Stained, 88 degrees
Mid lake and upper end
62 bass all under 5#. I had around 40 bass between 2 1/2# and 4 1/2# The largest was 4-12.
Zoom Trick and finesse worms, Yum 10" worm, Super Fluke, Magnum Super Fluke, 6" Fathead swimbait, Snag Proof Frog
Surface to 20'
Weedless wacky rigged the Zoom worms, Tx rigged the 10" worm, used a weighted hook for the Flukes and swimbait. Caught most of the bass on the edge or just off the edge of the hydrilla. The hydrilla is strong enough to work a 1/4 oz weighted worm through it without breaking off the stems. Used the frog on top of the dollar pads in shady areas.
Only saw 5 other boats all day.

Sunny, 90 degrees, calm winds
Clear 88, water level about 1' higher than last week
Lower end of the lake on points and humps
94 bass-all under 3#, 2 catfish, 1 bluegill
Zoom finesse worm, Rat-L-Trap, Slider worm on a 1/16 oz Spider Slider head
5'-13'
Wacky rigged the finesse worm weedless and exposed point. Fished the same pattern as the last two times there concentrating on the outside edge of the submerged weeds on points and above the weeds on humps.
Only three other boats today. It took 7 hours and 51 minutes to catch 75 bass today as opposed to last week when it took just over 12 hours for 75.

Not many to locat but the ones we found were scattered.
Bass 7 keepers
All baits
3-9 feet
plastics, crankbaits and topwater.
Fished the Region 8 tournament this past weekend. Instead of running to the lower creeks and burning alot of gas money we decided to fish between osborne and hopewell Caught 7 keeper, proably 10 dinks(only 2 fish out of the appoxmatics).fish came off of windy points on pretty much anything you wanted to throw. overall a very tough day. I think we weighed in like over 8lbs. Some guys caught them pretty good, but everyone i talk to that did well ran way down river so considering everything i was pleased with what we had.

The James just doesn't produce bass for me....in fact I wouldn't even fish there if it weren't so close to the house. Co-worker of mine caught 2 small white perch on a small crankbait...I caught a catfish on a spinnerbait.

upper river 2 feet, lower river 1 foor

20 plus bass, 2 bowfin and a perch

fished the pads on outgoing tide. Tide was just finishing coming in when we started.
Today was a blast. Have not had a day on the Chick like today in a few years. The river is back and in full swing. The bowfins blasted the blades on the edge of the grass. 1 was about 8 pounds and the other was well over 10 and about 30 inches. Wanted to weigh just to make sure but did not want that thing in the boat.

Appomattox River above Chesdin
sunny, 94 degrees, wind 10 - 20
slight stain, visibility about 2'
We put in at River Rd @ the Chesterfield Co., Amelia Co. line and motored & walked up river and then came back down
Together we caught over 75 Kentucky Spotted Bass to just over 1 lb., 8 Largemouth to 2.5 lb, over 200 Bream, 3 Ring Perch, 2Chain, over 20(White Perch or White Bass or Young Stipers), over 12 Sucker Fish (that's what my buddy calls them, I don't know the name of them)
#3, 5 & 7 Rapala minnow, spinner bait, wacky worm, Bettle Spin, Little Big O, 2" curly tail jig, t-rig worm, small rattle trap, shallow running Shad Rap
1' - 4'
We threw everything at any log jams, laydowns, and deep holes that we came across. Most of the Spotted bass were small and were caught on everything, the bream would hit everything also but most of them came off of the battle spin.
All but 1 largemouth were over 12". We didn't catch any smallmouth on this trip. We saw some stripers up to 14 lbs but they wouldn't hit anything. There are also some monster Carp in there to.

2 LMB, one 2lb and one 5lb
Black buzz bait with clicker
Popped the buzz bait like a popper.
Went down to the pond after happy hour. tried casting the buzz bait along the shore line. No takers. Finally started casting out towards the middle of the pond and found fish in deeper water. Had two misses and two hook ups. I love the top water bite but it usually causes me to try and set the hook too fast and miss fish. I cant help it.

3 lmb
spinnerbaits, zara spook, buzzers,frogs
2-5 feet
hit a lot of laydowns and got 2 lmb on those. Lost one on spinnerbait taking drag that felt good. got one on a zara spook near pads in shade. had a huge blowup when a decent bass followed frog to boat from pad and completely missed frog.
Could not get frog bite in pads, kinda surprised. Laydowns were ok, should've worked them better with spinner and maybe a soft plastic. Lake was little bigger than I thought. Ran into older guy who was heading back in and he said he did real well in back by channel. He said he got nothing under 5 lbs. If true, nice!!!!! Like the looks of this place, wanna spend more time in the back section with more lures and have enough battery juice....

We caught over 30 bass, 15 chain, 20 + crappies and about 10 bream

Got the other 6 from 9am-noon. Got 3 on a senko and 3 on a buzzer again either on laydowns and/or in the shade. First bass was 3.7 lbs, next was 3.0 lbs and then a bunch of 2lbers. Would of had about a 13 lb 5 fish bag. Was a good day overall. Took no pictures, wanted to get fish back in water right away, water was real warm and did not want to stress fish.

Hit some shallows early with topwater but no action. Got one fairly shallow on senko, then later switched to dropshot rig and got 1 in the standing timber. It wrapped around a tree but was small like all the bass I get in there and I got it unwrapped. I also got another small one on the dropshot on some underwater structure I found.
Overall, the dropshot has been my most consistent lure there, sometimes the senko. Can't get a frog bite there. Get them occassionally on a spinnerbait. Can't seem to catch any size at this lake though.

Saw a nice bass next to boat but no luck with that one. Got my last and best one on a drop shot worm in about 3-4 foot of water. Was about 15 inches. Nothing at the deep water timber.
Thought they would be in shallow weeds or deeper channel trees but nothing. Most fish were in relatively open water just cruising around and feeding on bugs on the surface. The water in spots was the clearest I've seen it. I found some underwater XMas trees and a ladder/picnic table/possible old roadbed? in another spot. Something to try out next time I guess. Left around noon when it started to get ugly. Decent day I guess.

Briery Creek
very windy, sunny bright, few clouds. Did I say windy?
dark when calm; stained where waves were hitting. Almost couldn't move up-lake with only electric.
Put in at dam, fished cove to right of dock, dropping shore further to right. Tried to make it across to the first left-hand arm, but electric ran out and got beaten into the shore! Fished deep stickups and channels when graphed.
1 LM, 15 in.
Threw the box, caught only one black spinnerbait with chartreuse trailer (yeah, I'm most comfortable with the old stuff.) Tried wacky, etc., though, even new X-Rap.
All depths. Graphed lots of schools stacked on top of each other in 30-10 feet, but not moving or biting.
Never a nibble on plastics, jig, cranks, whatever, through the schools. Only hit was on the shore drop-off on the right, past the fishing dock, about 3 pm when clouds covered, wind died for about 10 mins. Fish was about 6 feet out from the pads, about 6 feet down.
Only three other boats out there. Didn't talk to one, but no bass at all from the other two, with guys who at least looked and talked like they knew a little bit--so I guess I don't feel too bad! Did break my transducer mount on a stick-up in the whitecaps. Real fun there. But, I'll be back to catch a good day!

Heavy to slight stain 61.4 at the ramp in the AM and 66 at closing time-71.2 degrees in downlake coves
Mid lake to dam in the back if coves
55 bass-all under 3#, 2 catfish, 3 bluegills
Chatterbait, finesse worm, crankbait, 4" curlytail worm, spinnerbait
2'-15'
Wacky rigged the finesse worm weedless and exposed point, Tx rigged the curlytail worm Since the water temp was about 10 degrees cooler than last week due to the rain and cool weather, I looked for the warmest water and found it in the back of coves down lake that were somewhat clearer and out of the dirty water current. Most of the fish were at the outside edge of the weeds that were formerly at the water's edge.
The water level was about 2' higher than last week and had been higher by about another foot to foot and 1/2. I saw several schools of bass fry along the shoreline. The projected full pool lake level is sometime in June or July.

We fished mostly the windy side (The fact that most of the boats were in the protective coves helped that decision). The wind beat us to death but my boy caught 4 bass from 4.1 to 4.9 lbs and 2 @ 3.1 lbs. I caught the most, 25, and he caught the biggest. I did catch one at 3.3. Most of mines came off of the wacky worm (13) and the shaky head (7). His fished came off of wacky worm, shad rap, weighted t-rig worm and spinnerbait.
Fishing most of the day in the wind can really tired you out.

stained to clear 65 to 77 degrees
The fish on sat were roaming the shallow flats along the edges of the lily pads. Bigger fish were usually within casting distance of a creek channel or ditch. Sunday with no wind the fish went into the pads or into the nearby deeper water, but still hit agressivly
caught 120 bass and 2 pickerel with a 5.6 the biggest fish boated 60+ on sat and 55+ on sun
senkos and weightless various soft plastics with a 12 inch worm and the senko being the most effective`
all fish were caught in less than 3 feet of water
on sat the fish were roaming in front of the pads in packs with a lot of double hook ups with the other guy i was fishing with. caught 30+ fish tied off to one log. the most effective presentation was casting and not doing anything for sometimes minutes at a time. used 4lb test for a while and had 9 breakoffs (but boated a 4.4) until i got to frustrated to keep using it on sun the fish moved into the pads or to the nearest deep water but still bit well. occasionally would catch them roaming the edge of the pads but were real skittish. the guy i was fishing with caught the big one at the edge of the pads near dusk
fish seem to be mostly done spawning in the upper end of the lake. A lot of beds with no fish on them. Some of the fish caught were still prespawn though. Another great day on a great fishery

Was only my third time on Briery ever...went twice last year and caught a few fish....but had always heard about Briery in the spring! Wife and I took the dog...and had to anchor since the wind was blowing so hard. Turns out..it was probably the best thing that could happen! I stayed in one area and caught 18 largemouth....13 of which were over 15" long. I also caught my #1 and #2 largest bass ever....one was a 24 1/4" fish that showed on the scale at just over 7 pounds. Then the next cast caught one that was 21.5"! We took some pictures of the big fella, as he will qualify for a citation by length....should have been a much heavier fish, but seemed like a lot of fish were post spawn...and long and skinny. Was an amazing day....and yes, there were lots of boats out there battling the wind! All fish released unharmed...and even was able to do some good and remove a big weedless hook from one 4 pound fish.

After about 4:00 there were dozens of large bass in real shallow water almost on the surface and in or near dollar pads. They would splash and make large swirls when a lure was going overhead. The water was too dingy to see them before I got too close. I couldn't get any of them to take a lure. I think they had just moved out of the creeks channels and were warming up in the 65-66 water temp. Lots of splashing fish chasing shad in less than 3' depths in the dollar pads on the West side of the Briery Creek channel, not much action near Little Briery Creek. With air temps in the 70's for the next few days it's going to be exceptional catching by the weekend. I'll probably go back Friday. I am going to pick on those Hunting Run bass tomorrow.

Saturday caught numbers of bucks on traps and spinnerbaits and jigs. Caught fish shallow, and also saw fish suspended in tops. Two best fish came on Fat free shad on a deep point, and big fish of the day was a 5 plus on a jig at the base of a tree in 30ft just off creekchannel in a deep bay.
After frying my trolling motor sunday afternoon, I was forced to switch tactics and decided to try fishing some live bait monday even though it is not my forte. My buddy and I fished hard all day saturating what we thought were good prespawn holes with jumbo minnows only to miss the three good strikes we had. Left back to Blacksburg monday evening after a long day of slow fishing and NO FISH! All in all good trip -the big fish on saturday and my buddys face when he saw the lake for first time made it worth it. Im thinking we were just about a week early - next week its gonna be on.

The cold front that came in the night before was brutal! 30 temperature drop on Friday evening. Saturday morning was freezing. Upon arriving at hunting run for the first time we found 30 boats already on the water. That's alot for a 420 acre lake. To make matters worse, a steady 15 mph wind was blowing from the North w/41 degree temp at 11:00am. Definitely shut down the bass.
After reading Wayne's comments about the lake I figured it was worth evaluting the lake. My buddy caught a 5.1 citation pickerel on a husky jerk and I caught two bass, 3.10 and 6.2 both on jig/pig. Both bass were caught within 10 min of each other around 3:30PM. Both fish came off of wood. Big fish came off of large submerged tree sticking up out of water. Wind relented somewhat in afternoon and the sun came out to warm things up.

Went today with my buddy Chris. The guy with the electric Triton was out there along with a half dozen other boats. I tried a wacky worm but quickly switched back to a crank cause thats what worked for me before there. I was just careful to use my pliers this time around. When I was up 4 fish to none to Chris, I convinced him to use a crankbait to. He caught one on the second cast w it. Caught a couple more and we had 7. After I got home I went down to the pond at sunset. I caught 1 catfish and 1 bass that was just over 5 lbs on a 6" Yum Dinger. The pond is warmer than the reservoir and you can really see the difference in the fishes pre-spawn staging patterns and behavior. The pond bass was fat and shallow.

I took a while to develop a pattern as the water temp was 6 degrees cooler than last week. The sunshine pattern wasn't working so I tried the downwind pattern and that worked as the water was warmer in downwind coves and cuts. I slow rolled the spinnerbait on a long cast to the back of the coves and followed that up with the Trap and wacky rigged finesse worm. The most productive period was between 4PM and 6:30PM.
Several bass boats on the lake today, most left early-too much wind, I guess The last two bass I caught came on back to back casts. I had caught the 5-4 and was moving the boat away from shore to set the camera, weigh the fish and take a picture. I saw a swirl near where that bass came from so I put it on a stringer for the set-up, made a cast and caught a 3-10. Got a pictue of both of them together.

Weedless wacky rigged the finesse worm. Used a Zoom split tail trailer on the Chatterbait. After looking for fish on the bottom for a Silver Buddy presentation and not seeing any, I tried shallow near steep drops and found some NICE ones. The productive areas were banks with direct sunshine.
I didn't catch the numbers I was anticipating but the quality made up for it. I bought 100 finesse worms yesterday just in case. The first bass I caught weighed 6-8 and about 5 minutes later I caught a 6-10 on the same pattern that held up all day. The largest caught was 7-1 with one over 5# and three over 4#. All the large ones except one hit the Chatterbait and that one of 4-11 was with the weedless wacky rigged finesse worm. The water level is about 4' higher than it was a couple of weeks ago so launching was not a problem, just the absense of a dock makes recovery when fishing alone a challenge-take some at least knee high rubber boots if you go. Started up lake but temp was around 32-33. Moved down to the dam, water was 40+. Dragged a blue jig all over as slow as I could stand. No takers

Black/Blue jig with a craw trailer
7-15 feet
Finally had a chance to go and jumped on it. Water was cold as to be expected. The guy down at Eagles nest said the lake was covered in ice three days ago. I found a couple of spots completly covered. Wanted to stay longer just could not get away from the wind. Was actually nice when the sun was shining and the wind layed down. Looks like a lot of work going on at the dam. They were working on it today. I did not see anything that looked different to me.....

slow
Went to chick today did pretty good with the ring perch but nothing else seemed to be biting. Didnt care to much because it was to cold to work to hard to find fish. Caught 3 right at 12 inches and maybe 10 between 11 and 12 and some smaller ones. Not bad for 35 degrees most of the day in january. Will try to figure out how to post picks on here if anyone wants to see them?

70 degrees mostly sunny
main river said 39, cove said 42 at noon. At barge pits 46 in 7 foot water, 52 in the shallows
Left out of Osbornes fished a cove on the left for a while and then hit the barge pit area near the end of the day
none
spinnerbait, drop shot worm, rattle trap, kreature bait
tried to focus on 4-6 foot of water. did hit some shallower and deeper water too
Tried the rattle trap and drop shot around some deeper water spots. Tried the spinnerbait and kreature bait around some laydowns.
Only fished 3 hours total, mostly drove around and checked things out. Never been there before. I met one guy with orange shirt and white hat that said he got one small one in the morning in the barge pits but quiet after that. Saw a lot of boats out there, huge engines, it appeared that I could have used something larger than my 9.9 engine out there. Joefroggy

Mostly sunny 70 degrees, breezy
clear to stained 40-45 degrees
Upper end, mid-lake, and within sight of the dam
2 bass, both were 3# 2oz.
Weedless wacky rigged trick worm. jig, Rat-L-Trap, hula grub, Chatterbait, spinnerbait
10'-30.
After a lot of searching for the warmest water, the bass I caught were suspended in trees at about 10' and I caught them with the Trick worm working it slowly thru the limbs. The trees that produced the fish were about 25' from each other.
5 other boats on the lake today. I'm going to try the private lake tomorrow.

Floated all day Sat, camped Sat night, and floated and fished Sunday am to the take out. Area around Bremo Bluff (takeout) looked good with some deeper water and some nice rapids.
